Ford recommends it be inspected and replaced if needed at 60,000 miles. I have a 2002 ZX5 and I changed mine at 120,000 miles. 120 is a bit much but there was no visible wear on the belt right up to the time I replaced it. Also when you do replace the belt, spend the extra money and change the idlers and tensioner. Most timing belt "failures" I've seen are from the idlers or tensioner wearing out. Dealer cost is about $345 for parts and labor.
See the answer for "How do you replace the drive belt in a 2000 Ford Focus?". The procedure is the same.

The Ford recommended mileage for replacing the timing belt is 120,000 miles, for the 2000 Focus. I doubt that the engine changed much, if any, between 2000 and 2001.
