The "performance" button does not give more power, nor does it make you accelerate faster. The performance button only changes the shift patterns of the automatic transmission.
When in performance mode, the transmission shifts a little later, when the engine is running at a higher RPM. It's best to use the performance button when you have several people in the vehicle or are otherwise carrying a heavy load.
