Agathis microstachya was created in 1918.
Agathis trees are gymnosperms, from the Araucariaceae family.
Kauri tree.
According to my research and personal experience, both alder and agathis are considered soft woods, but I believe alder is the harder of the two. But wood densities can vary greatly. Agathis is in the pine family, so it would stand to reason that it's soft. The alder wood guitar bodies that I own don't seem that soft to me! Hope that helps.
Kauri (Agathis australis).

Agathis wood is a fairly cheap wood useful for making all sorts of things. It's a general purpose wood. A tropical tree in the pine family, however it is not as soft as pine. It can be used to make musical instruments, however it is not the best wood for that purpose. Actually, it's not the best wood for making anything, but it could easily be used to make anything. It's a "universal" wood.
The botanical name for raja kayu wood is Agathis borneensis. It is a species of coniferous tree native to Southeast Asia.
So that when somebody talks about an organism everybody will know what organism they are talking about. The scientific name Agathis australis is used for only one particular type of tree.
