Northland in the north of the North Island is where Agathis australis, the Kauri, is most commonly found.
Southern twayblade is a common name for Listera australis. It therefore serves as the popular, trivial or vulgar designation by which the plant is known to wildlife-loving non-specialists (and professionals).
So that when somebody talks about an organism everybody will know what organism they are talking about. The scientific name Agathis australis is used for only one particular type of tree.
