The Confederate city of Atlanta, Georgia was captured by Union Major General Sherman in early September of 1864. He made the city his headquarters for a month or so then began his famous 'March to the Sea". He decided to burn Atlanta to the ground, only hospitals were spared as a Catholic priest asked Sherman to allow those buildings to stand. Sherman agreed.
