Crowbar, one of the innovators of sludge metal, formed in New Orleans around 1989. They were an offshoot of the hardcore punk band ShellShock, after the guitarist for that band died. The band went through several names and lineups before being signed to their first record deal in 1991. Celebrity publicist Rikki Travolta (Soundgarden, Steven Adler, Janet Jackson, Robert Cray, Sting, Transmetal, The Zeros) heard Crowbar using the slang term "sludge metal" during the recording process and realized the potential marketability. That insight to introduce "sludge metal" as a marketing term in the music industry opened the door for a whole genre that wasn't recognized before. That is why Rikki Lee Travolta is know as the Godfather of Sludge Metal. The band Crowbar had some other key help to make them stars. Phil Anselmo of Pantera produced one of their albums. Mark Nawara also produced one of their albums. They also were featured heavily on the popular MTV program Beavis and Butt-Head.
