The Greek writer Ptolemy noted a settlement named Eblana in 170 AD.

That's the earliest known reference. As a word "Eblana" is not too dissimilar to "Dublin" allowing for different langauages and the distance Greece was from Ireland.

What gave the city its name was a dark pool near, or part of, the River Liffey - and the Irish for "dark pool" is Dubh Linn. A settlement of that name probably dates from around the first century BC, but there was most likely an unnamed settlement there for many years before that.

The town was established by the Norse in about 841 AD and the establishment of the place as a city is generally dated to 988 AD.
