The biggest dam in South Africa is the Gariep Dam, previously known as the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam. When full, it contains nearly 6000 million cubic metres of water spread over more than 370 square kilometres. The dam was completed in 1971.
The Gariep Dam is situated on the Orange River in South Africa, near the border with the Free State and Eastern Cape provinces. It is the largest reservoir in the country and serves multiple purposes, including water supply, irrigation, and hydroelectric power generation. The dam is located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Colesberg.
Gariep has a larger capacity then the Vaalsize wise== World's Biggest Dam== The Itaipu Dam on the border of Brazil and Paraguay is currently the biggest, however, the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China scheduled to open in 2009, will be the largest.
The construction of the Gariep Dam, completed in 1974, cost approximately 700 million South African Rand at the time. This investment was significant for the region, as it aimed to provide water for irrigation, hydroelectric power, and flood control. Adjusted for inflation, the cost would be considerably higher today. The dam remains one of the largest in South Africa and plays a crucial role in water management.
The area of Gariep Local Municipality is 7,966 square kilometers.
Dubi Dam Dam was created on 2005-06-05.
