The tricolor flag (black, red, gold) of modern Germany was designed by the republican movement that first met in 1832 at the Hambacher Fest. When popular revolutions were begun in 1848, it symbolized a united Germany.

A black-white-red flag was adopted after the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, which heralded the creation of the German Empire in 1871. It was not until the Weimar Republic in 1919 that the "Schwarz-Rot-Gold" flag became the official flag of the country.

The flag was replaced from 1933 to 1945 by the Nazi flag (swastika) designed by Adolf Hitler in 1920 for the Nazi Party.

(From 1933 to 1935, the swastika flag and the old imperial black-white-red were both official flags.)
