burial mask of King Tutankhamen
created:1322 B.C
found:1922 in the valley of the kings
current location: Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt.
Tut's tomb is the only ancient Egyptian tomb ever discovered technically intact. The tomb was invaded by robbers, probably within a few hundred years of Tut's burial, and then it was re-sealed by priests. Fortunately it was not found again until discovered by Carter in 1922. Since it was established beyond doubt that the tomb was sealed by priests of the necropolis (the city of the dead) it is considered intact, even though it had been violated in ancient times. The outer entry to the tomb was intact when Carter discovered it, just as the ancient repairers left it. And it was sealed with the seal of the necropolis priesthood.
The sarcophagus and its surrounding gold-leafed shrines were completely untouched when opened by Carter and his team; the robbers did not make it that far into the tomb. One wonders if the robbers suffered the misfortune of being caught in the act. They would certainly have known that the sarcophagus would be the greatest prize. The gold mask was still in its intended resting place on the king's mummy within the nest of coffins, one of which is of solid gold.
