A:The majority of biblical scholars say that Matthew's Gospel was written in the 80s of the first century CE, although Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says that an allowance of a few years should be allowed before or after this decade. The Gospel is traditionally considered to have been written to a Jewish audience but it is now felt that this was not the case. It was written in Greek, rather than Aramaic or Hebrew, and most Jews would recognise some of the erroneous Old Testament references and cultural errors.

The First Roman-Jewish War had finished catastrophically for the Jews in 70 CE, with the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. Left without a role as priests or religious leaders, the previously dominant Sadducee sect of Judaism was heading for oblivion. Even the Pharisees were uncertain of their future, although this sect would survive to evolve into modern rabbinacal Judaism. Meanwhile Christians still attended the Jewish synagogues, but the two religions were rapidly moving towards a irrevocable breakdown in relations such that Christians would soon be banned from the synagogues. This developing antagonism is evident in Matthew, which is more strident in its criticism of the Jews than was the earlier Mark's Gospel.

Although written in a Greek-speaking milieu, Matthew's Gospel could have been pitched not only to existing Christians but also to Jews of the diaspora and pagan 'God-fearers' who saw Christianity as the natural successor to a dying Judaism.

What was the approximate date of Matthew's Gospel?

It is the almost universal consensus of biblical scholars that Matthew's Gospel was substantially based on Mark's Gospel. Since Mark is believed to have been written approximately 70 CE, Matthew must therefore have been written some time later. The consensus is that it was written in the 80s of the first century.

Did Matthews great use of the old testament prophecies give greater appeal to the gentiles?

Not so very much at first. Matthew's gospel was written more to the Jew. perhaps the Hellenistic Jews. The Gentiles would have had a more difficult time reading Matthew's gospel as Matthew cited Jewish cites, namesand Jewish customs without explaining them. The Gentile would have had to put in much research in reading Matthew's gospel. Today there is no problem in reading Matthew because most of the research has already been done for the reader.

Which gospel comes last in the New Testament?

A:John's Gospel was loosely based on Luke's Gospel, which was in turn based on Mark's Gospel, while there are good grounds for believing that Matthew, also based on Mark, was written some time before Luke. Thus, John was the last New Testament gospel to be written, and is dated to the early decades of the second century.

What is the context of the Gospel of Mark?

Although not at first apparent, the context of Mark's Gospel was the First Jewish War and the destruction of the Temple. There had been no gospel written in the decades since the time of Jesus, but scholars say that this gospel was written within about two years either side of the year 70 CE, when the Romans entered Jerusalem. The apocalyptic material in Mark was the consequence of the civil war in Jerusalem and the terrible destruction that eventuated.
