The Korean Peninsula was once a large nation called 'Chosun 조선'. When the Japanese colonized it in the early 20th Century under Taft-Katsura Agreement, it became a part of Japan. When the Japanese got nuked in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the 1940s, they left the Korean Peninsula and Chosun came back. Then, the USSR decided to spread Communism through the Pacific, and the Korean Peninsula acted as a bridge to Japan, so China acted on the Northern part of the Peninsula and made them attack the South. Then the US and UN army came in to stop the Communism from spreading (that was US' role) and to help the Southern part of Korea (UN's role). So the Korean War started. The Armistice was signed in 1955 (i could be wrong, the war is 'paused' not ended), and the Korean Peninsula was divided along the 38th Parallel. So North and South Korea is officially born. So although the Nations were once together, they got divided in the 50s. (and i know this because i am korean)
