St. Valentine is a pre-congregational saint. At the time he died there was no official formal procedure for canonization. He would have been acclaimed a saint by those who knew him to a local bishop who then would have approved the petition.

St. Valentine of Rome was a priest, possibly a bishop, in the third century. When the Roman Emperor made marriage illegal (he was having trouble raising an army because he could not draft married men) Valentine continued to marry couples in secret.

That did not please the emperor so he had Valentine thrown into prison and then beaten and beheaded about the year 269. Shortly before he was killed he sent a note to a young girl who had befriended him asking her to remain faithful to God. He signed it "From Your Valentine."

He was not canonized as that process did not become instituted until the 12th century. He was declared a saint by the early Christian community based on his life of heroic virtue and martyrdom.

St Valentine was jailed for helping Chritians. While he was in jail he fell in love with the jailer's daughter who was blind, and by a miracleher sight was restored. Before St Valentine was executed it is said that his love a good bye note signed 'from your valentine'

St. Valentine continued to marry couples after the Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus made it illegal. He was taken prisoner, tortured and martyred for his faith. In the early Church a martyr was automatically considered as a saint.

It is not actually known when he was canonized. It is believed it was shortly after his execution, which means it would have probably been done quietly. It is believed to have been sometimes around February the 14th, 269. The years 270 and 273 have also been recorded.
