Due to the difficulty of supplying the mission from such a great distance (over 700 miles), illness and death being rampant among the indians, the indians' belief that the baptismal waters were responsible for their illnesses and their subsequent refusal to congregate in the mission, and the death of one of the priests, the mission was abandoned in October 1694. Additionally, droughts and floods occurring between 1690 and 1694 had decimated their crops. Therefore, the friars buried the cannon and bells, packed the vestments, and set fire to the picket structure of the mission. They arrived back in Monclova, Mexico on February 17, 1695.
