Singapore's first parliamentary election as a sovereign and independent nation was held on April 19 1968, resulting in the People's Action Party winning all 58 seats up for election in the newly formed Parliament.
Prior to independence, in 1948, British subjects only had been allowed to vote for a 22-member Legislative Council for the first time, though only 6 seats were directly elected. It was not until 1955 that Singapore held its first full general election, with 25 (of 32) elected members of the Legislative Assembly.
However, most consider the 1959 election to be Singapore's true first general election. It was the first time in history that all Singaporeans could vote in all constituencies, not to mention the first election in which Singapore was a largely self-governing region.
