They were Samuel, Stephen, Elizabeth, Ellen, Alexander, Anne and Mary Longfellow. His younger brother, Samuel, became a well known hymn writer. Sister Ellen Longfellow died of Typhus in 1835. Anne was widowed at an early age and spent the rest of her life in the home she was born in. Brother, Alexander became a civil engineer. American history. Longfellow wrote a poem called the "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" in 1861 to remind the country of the reasons for the nation just before the start of the civil war. This poem seems to have become the foundation for the story that Revere rode through the night yelling "the British are coming". It just isn't true and the only place it could have come from was his poem. The truth is that Revere was arrested outside of Boston and never finished the ride. This is how history gets changed and becomes "fact" when the true story is forgotten. Many things in American history have been changed because of things like this. Longfellow didn't mean for this to happen, but it did and the story still lives as part of our history.
