Thomas Becket's was the first to die due to a severe cold in winter. Evidence proves that she died before her husband from letters to Becket from his father ".....thy mother wouldst be happy if she lived....."

Thomas Becket (c1118-1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of King Henry II who was of the Plantagenet dynasty. The first Stuart king was James I who ascended the English throne in 1603. Thomas Becket died over 400 years before the Stuart age began.
On Henry II's penitential pilgrimage to St Dunstans, Canterbury, where Becket was first buried, in 1174, he changed into his sackcloth and ashes in which he then walked to Thomas Becket's tomb.
We cannot know for sure why Thomas Becket refused to leave the cathedral with the knights who came to get him. But from what I have read of Thomas Becket, I would guess it was because he was praying, and he was not about to stop praying just because four knights were threatening him with swords. The statements we get from the time indicate, in fact, that when they first struck him with the swords, wounding him, he continued praying.

Pope Alexander III humbled King Henry II of England for the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170, to whom he was unusually close, later canonizing St. Thomas Becket in 1173. This was the second English saint canonized by Alexander, the first being Edward the Confessor in 1161. - from Wikipedia
"Murder in the Cathedral" is a play by T.S. Eliot that dramatizes the assassination of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. The play explores themes of martyrdom, power, and the clash between spiritual and secular authority. It reflects on Becket's moral courage and the consequences of standing up for one's beliefs in the face of political pressure.
Since Becket is Henry's loyal servant, the power of the church was about to fall right into the hands of Henry. Or so he thought. Thomas Becket changed. His old life of luxury and accessories morphed into a life of strict obedience and religious zeal to God. His loyalty to the King turned into an immobile trust and love for God, and his great mind was now a property of the Church. When Henry first heard of this unbelievable change in Becket, he sent letter after letter to him just to make sure that his best friend had not sided with his enemy. Sadly, Becket was a man of God now. See http://www.123helpme.com/view.asp?id=22909 for more info
