A GM counter has an anode that is held at a positive high voltage potential. This is so it can attract electrons released by ionization events in the shell. When an event occurs, electrons are transferred to the anode, temporarily reducing its voltage, hence the negative going pulse.

This is a very common problem with the GM 4L60-E and 4L80-E automatic transmissions. It is the result of a weak reaction sun gear shell. Unfortunately this is one of the few GM transmission problems that require a rebuild or replacement of the transmission. GM has released an updated sun shell that is much stronger than the original. There is also another replacement sun shell called "The Beast", that many people opt for. It is also a good idea to have the updated GM valve body installed. You can expect to pay anywhere from $1,700 - $2,200 to have this repaired at the dealer. Sometimes you can find small transmission shops that will do it for as low as $1,000, but you can't be sure that quality parts will be used. I will attach a link to some of GM's most common tranny problems. See the Related Link for "Transmission Problems: Common Issues and Solutions" to the right for more info.
