There was actually a rather long list of military deferments, ranging from the only source of survival for another person to mental insanity. But by far the most common two for the Viet War were:
1. CO-Conscientious objectors; which had an awful lot of hoops to jump thru before that deferment was granted. It was easy enough to get during the early stages of the war, but when word got around and everybody was trying to get one, the US Gov't upped the standards for qualifying for it.
2. Of these two, (CO being the other one), an educational deferment was KING! A COLLEGE deferment; carrying at least 18 units and maintaining a 2.0 average could keep a potential draftee from serving his country. Which is probably why an awful lot of "College Students" rioted and protested, in order to stay out've the military, they actually had to maintain a 2.0 average (they actually had to work a little bit)! Instead of just showing up and expecting to be "draft exempt." By far, most of the anti-war/anti-draft protests and riots occurred on COLLEGE CAMPUSES. In fact the bloodiest one was on a college campus...Kent State.
Young male members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) living in the United States during the Vietnam War were given two year religious deferments to serve as missionaries for their church if their church leaders indicated that they were in fact going to serve as missionaries.
This was the case with presidential candidate Mitt Romney. He recieved a religious deferment to serve as a missionary in France. When he came home two years later he was issued a draft card but his number was never called up.
Probably about '73.
1971 is correct (my draft number was 3)

No, he did not. When he was born in 1961, he was too young to be sent to Vietnam. It should also be noted that a number of presidential and vice-presidential candidates did not serve in a war either; for example, Bill Clinton got a student deferment, and Mitt Romney got a deferment as a Mormon missionary.

Some Americans opposed the initial proposal of draft deferment because they were not in favor of deferment. The main reason for their opposition was that they opposed deferment. During this time period many Americans felt that the deferment was something that they should be opposed to. Because they were opposed to deferment, some Americans, felt the need to oppose deferment, they did this to oppose the deferment, in order to show that they opposed deferment. The following people are historical figures that were opposed to deferment: John Locke, Kate Austin, Jin Kwon, Sun Kwon, Hugo Reyes, Claire Littleton, Jack Shepard (not to be confused with Jack Bauer), Benjamin Linus, Richard Alpert, James Ford, Charlie Pace (of DriveShaft), Desmond Hume, Sayid Jarrah, Charles Widmore, Daniel Faraday, Michael Dawson, and Jacob. (REAL ANSWER) Seriously though, Americans opposed deferment for many reasons, mainly because it allowed people to "chicken out" of fighting for their country, and the people who did this are referred to as "draft dodgers" (REAL ANSWER) "What Happened?"
