After the mutiny, the mutineers split up, some staying at Tahiti, and the remainder sailing on to Pitcairn Island. Those on Tahiti were arrested by Capt. Edward Edwards in 1791. Those who went to Pitcairn, burned and sank the Bounty there (1789). They had taken some natives with them and the men largely killed each other off. At the time of their discovery in 1808 by Capt. Folger of the U.S. ship Topaz, only one remained. He called himself John Adams, but was know as Alexander Smith on the Bounty.
