Chocolate as a raw and bitter bean type food was eaten by the people of Central and South America for hundreds if not thousands of years. We can't say for certain what date it was first recorded, but it gained awareness by the civilized nations of Spain, France, England, and the like due to explorers like Christopher Columbus. Even at that point, the native people of the "New World" had learned to make it into a far more bitter form of our hot chocolate.
