Answer 11943 Answer 2, Additional InputSince the question did not specify what type of computer, and there have been many prior to the electronic digital computer refered to in answer 1, I submit that the first computer referenced in recorded history is the abbacas which is reported to have originated in China somewhere in the time frame of 1000 BC to 500 BC. I have also read that some historical reports place its origin in Mesopotamia during the same time period.j3h.

In the 1830s, by Charles Babbage, helped by his friend the mathematician, Ada Lovelace. Sadly his mechanical computer, primarily designed for computing trig and log tables, were never completed for reasons not now very clear, but the Science Museum (London) recently completed sufficient of it to show it would have worked

WW2: "Colossus", by a team of mathematicians including most famously Alan Turing, and electronics engineers at the then-top-secret, now famous Bletchley Park, in England. "Colossus", with its banks of relays and thermionic valves, was the world's first programmable electronic computer; but was kept so secret because it was for decoding the 'Enigma'-coded Werhmacht radio traffic. This code system came to light in the British government when the Royal Navy succeeded in capturing a U-boat and recovering the boat's own Enigma machine; though the Enigma system generally was devised in Germany not long after WW1.

Unfortunately The UK's Prime Minister, Mr. (later Sir) Winston Churchill, failed to think sufficiently far ahead, and perhaps fearful of the Soviet Union, at the end of the War he ordered the lot be destroyed! A few scraps of the computer and some of its drawings survived, but he could not foreseen the long-term loss to the nation.

February 15, 1946: the ENIAC computer, (USA) built for military computing; perhaps now showing the flexibility of a programmable computer in that it was not designed and programmed just for one set of sums. Its original application was in preparing artillery-aiming tables, but it was also used in nuclear weapon research.
