The first to try to fix the images on the camera obscura by chemical means were the brothers Joseph Nicephore and Claude Niepce, officers in the French army and navy respectively, while stationed at Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, in 1793. Towars the close of the eighteenth century Thomas Wedgwood, and amateur scientist, conceived independently the same idea. The world's first successful photograph was taken by Nicephore Niepce on a pewter plate in 1826, using his first professionally-made camera supplied by the Parisian optician Charles Chevalier.
