August Horch (born 12 October 1868 in Winnenden, Germany; died 3 February 1951 in Muenchberg) was a German automobile pioneer at the turn of the 20th Century. After working for Carl Benz, the inventor of the modern automobile, for several years, he founded his own automobile company, August Horch & Company, in 1899 and produced the first vehicle with a four-stroke engine. As a result of the success of his company, he went public in 1904 and placed it on the German stock exchange. When sales slumped however he was unceremoniously dumped by his shareholders. In 1910, Horch founded a new company called Horch Automobilwerke (Horch Automobile Works) but a law suit filed by Horch's first company alleging trademark infringement led to a court ruling that Horch & Company owned the rights to August Horch's name. Horch then renamed his new company Audi, a Latin Translation of the name Horch (literally meaning to hear, to hark).
The founder of Audi is August Horch. When August Horch stormed out of the company that he had founded only to create another, he no longer had the right to use his name. August Horch translated the meaning of the word Horch (evesdropping) into Latin, which gave the name Audi.

August Horch
The Audi car company was founded by August Horch in Germany.Following some legal problems he was prevented from using "Horch" as the company name.In German "horch" means "hear", which is "audi" in Latin. He (or actually his son) translated his name from German to Latin.Beyond this it seems to have no deeper meaning.
August
The name "Audi" derives from the Latin translation of the surname of the company's founder, August Horch. In German, "horch" means "listen," and the Latin equivalent is "audi." Thus, when Horch founded his new car company in 1909 after leaving his first company, he chose the name Audi as a nod to his legacy and the meaning of his last name.
