'Audi' was 'Horch' at one time which was founded on Nov 14th 1899 by Lance Hildebrand and August Horch.
August Horch (born 12 October 1868 in Winnenden, Germany; died 3 February 1951 in Muenchberg) was a German automobile pioneer at the turn of the 20th Century. After working for Carl Benz, the inventor of the modern automobile, for several years, he founded his own automobile company, August Horch & Company, in 1899 and produced the first vehicle with a four-stroke engine. As a result of the success of his company, he went public in 1904 and placed it on the German stock exchange. When sales slumped however he was unceremoniously dumped by his shareholders. In 1910, Horch founded a new company called Horch Automobilwerke (Horch Automobile Works) but a law suit filed by Horch's first company alleging trademark infringement led to a court ruling that Horch & Company owned the rights to August Horch's name. Horch then renamed his new company Audi, a Latin Translation of the name Horch (literally meaning to hear, to hark).
