Although the Australian flag had been in use since its approval by King Edward VII was gazetted in February 1903, this was not the date it was officially adopted.

The flag was officially adopted after the Flags Act 1953 was passed by the government under Prime Minister Robert Menzies, and the Act was assented to by Queen Elizabeth II when she first visited Australia on 15 April 1954.
