The fort that now constitutes Sealand was originally known as HM Fort Roughs, otherwise known as Roughs Tower. It was one of several Maunsell Sea Forts installed around the southeast coast of England in WWII. This particular fort's specific purpose was to protect the port of Harwich, Essex.
The fort was constructed in 1942, and on 11 February 1943, Three tug boats towed the fort out to its designated location on the sandbar Rough Sands, from which the fort derived its name.
