In 1940, Germany launched its attack on Western Europe. It was a massive invasion that swept over the lowlands including Belgium. Not long after the fall of Belgium, France was then successfully invaded and surrendered.
Britain, because if they hadn't held out against the Germans after the fall of France, Holland, Belgium, Norway and Poland in 1939-1940, WW2 could not have been won in the first place. But after that, would be America who contributed with Men and Machines during and after Operation Torch and D-Day

WWI occurred as a result of secret alliances. Once the first declaration of war was made, the dominoes began to fall. Germany's Schlaffen Plan called for a rapid envelopment through Holland and Belgium, hoping to catch France off guard before it could fully mobilize its forces. France was still looking for an opportunity to redeem itself after losing the two Franco-Prussian Wars.

The specific reason was that German forces invaded Belgium on their way to France. Britain, France and Prussia (the key forerunner of Germany) had guaranteed Belgian neutrality in 1839 (and again in 1875). Moreover, Britain was an ally of France and was not willing to let a substantial part of the coast opposite Britain fall into unfriendly hands.
During World War II, the German plan to invade France through Belgium and the imposing area of the Ardennes Forest was called "Fall Gelb." Meaning "Case (or, Operation) Yellow," the plan went through numerous revisions before taking its final, and highly daring, form.
