because his laws were meant for everyone and it was fair. If a rich person and and a commoner made the bad thing they would get the same treatment
NOT! In social studies now i am learning about The Sumerians and ancient Sumerian empires. And, A rich person and a commoner would NOT have the same punishment. If you were rich then you would pay back something. Like one of Hammurabi's laws are the following:
If a commoner poked the eye of a man out he would have his eye poked out too.
If a rich commoner poked the eye of another commoners eye out then he would have to sell his wife daughter or son to business for 3 years.
Another thing, if a SLAVE had done something then he would also have more severe punishments. Like this:
If a commoner poked out the eye of another commoners bull's eye out he would pay the amount of that bull double.
If a slave poked out the eye of a commoners bull then he would have his eye poked out too.
and I don't know whats up with the eyes I'm just copying what the teacher (no worksheet) said.
and ill tell you something else i heard about his laws:
What the person did (pd): boy slap his father
Punishment (p): hand would get cut off
pd: Nun went into a wine store to get a drink ( i know crazy! they had wine!)
p:IS killed
PD: a wife disobeys her duties and ignores her husband
P: Killed
that's all i remember but yea.
Hammurabi failed to recognize the value of human life. Let's say that one day a man kills another man. The killer would only have to pay a sum of money to bail himself out, but if a man steals he would have to die. He killed a human being. You cannot replace life. See how Hammurabi's laws were unfair? Hammurabi's laws were unjust and cruel.
Being put to death for false accusations, having your tongue cut out for insulting someone, having your hands cut off for giving the wrong kind of haircut and being thrown into a fire for looking upon someone else's property, they are all punishments found in the Code of Hammurabi. Compared to other kings, most historians agree that Hammurabi was a just King. Having harsh laws don't make the king a bad person.
They allways were fair. That Question doesnt make sense
Because the laws did not favor the rich. The rich got the same punishments that the poor got. They also helped Hammurabi have a better country, Babylon.
yes some of them except on one of them where if the child slapped the father his hand must be cut off
The rules of the law were just.
Mots laws are fair in punishment to the culprit. Once a person becomes a victim, there is not much anyone can do.

Hammurabi made a list of about 200 laws. Some were cruel and others were fair. Examples: If a son hits his father his hand shall be cut off. "cruel" If a doctor messes up an operation he shall lose his job. "fair" Hammurabi advanced the cause of justice because, Hammurabi's laws brought the idea that if your bad you will be punished. If your good you will be rewarded.
