It's peak was around 1920. It had millions of members then -15% of the American population. , and in reality, the proportin of the population is much higher. KKK accepts only white and mostly only protestant, so in the 15% the afro - american, jews, catholics white(irish for example) and hispanic were not included. so it had more than a 50% proportion in the "white and protestant" group.

There were three different periods during which the KKK was active. It was the most powerful during the early 1920s because it had substantial membership around the country due to its strong support and (illegal) defense of prohibition. It declined as support for prohibition declined and also as a result of a major scandal of the organization's leader.

yes of course, at about this time they had about 6 million members, which influenced also the politicans! It was not in the 1920s, but for Example Robert Byrd was a member of the KKK and also active in politics.

from http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Byrd#Participation_in_the_Ku_Klux_Klan :

" He has also held many leadership positions: Senate Conference Secretary, Majority Whip, Minority Leaderand twice Majority Leader. He is the only former party leader currently in the Senate."
