The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act was signed into law on August 20th, 1987. Malcolm Baldrige died in a rodeo accident in a rodeo accident on July 25th, 1987, 26 days earlier. Although the Award was established in the fall of 1987, the first Awards were not presented until 1988 to Globe Metallurgical, Motorola and Westinghouse Electric Corporation Commercial Nuclear Fuel Division.
