The Chinese landed in either Sydney or Melbourne, then travelled to the goldfields from there.
Melbourne is currently the capital of the state of Victoria, Australia. Melbourne enormously benefited from the gold rush in the 19th century and became the "richest city in the world". It organised international exhibitions, constructed big building. Melbourne was the place to be then. George Sala, an English journalist, called the city "Marvellous Melbourne" when he visited it. I might be biased, because I live in Melbourne, but I still find Melbourne marvellous.
