There is no such river as the Murray-Darling River.
The Murray and Darling Rivers are two quite distinct and separate rivers, so were therefore discovered at different times. The Darling is merely a tributary of the Murray, but together they form the major rivers in Australia's biggest river system, known as the Murray-Darling river system.
Charles Sturt discovered the Darling River on 2 February 1829. He is also credited with naming the Murray River, doing so in 1830. However, the first Europeans to discover the Murray River were explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell, on 16 November 1824.
