The American Republican Party, also referred to as The Grand Old Party or GOP for short, was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists. Somehow The Democratic party is often viewed as the more anti-racist and morally or politically correct of the two major parties, at least in recent times. Which is sad because Abraham Lincoln actually was a republican and equal rights and opportunities is the brainchild of the political right side, not the left. The republicans can easily be identified by their use of the color red and an Elephant as a logo.
The Republican party was created out of the waning Whig party and Free Soil Democrats and a few other "third" parties in reaction to the Kansas-Nebraska act of 1854. When the Republican party ran Abraham Lincoln as their presidential candidate in 1860 the world of political parties was a fractured one. Lincolns election and the success of the Northern forces in the Civil War gave the party a secure foundation to be a force in American politics from that point until 1932.
Some people confuse "Republican" Party and the "Democratic" Party with the concepts of a Republic and a Democracy. In fact the United States of America is a Republic with democratic processes. Countries without democracy can be Republics. The Soviet Union was a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and feigned democracy. North Korea, with its cult of personality is a Republic. A Republic is basically anything that isn't a Monarchy or an Oligarchy.
A Democracy is a Republic that uses democratic processes to a very high extent to determine national issues. The United States uses a representative democracy wherein everyone votes for representatives (members of Congress) who are charged with determining the course of the nation.
The Pledge of Allegiance in the United States is; "I pledge allegiance to the Flag, of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Showing that the Republic aspect of the nation is recognized. The Constitution, State Constitutions and private organizations using Robert's Rules of Order all operate on democratic principles.

The modern Democratic Party in the US originated with the Republican Party: now referred to as the Democratic-Republican Party (1791-1825). The Democratic Party was founded in 1828. After the original Democratic-Republican Party split in 1825, those who opposed Democratic president Andrew Jackson formed the Whig Party in 1833.
The Republican Party Platform was formed in 1956, 100 years after the Republican Party was formed. They are the Conservative political party in America.
The Democratic Republican Party didn't actually evolve into a modern day party. The original party was often referred to as just the Republican Party. The modern day Republican Party was named as an homage to the original Republican Party.
The Democratic Party and the Republican Party have never been together as a single party.
