India's emblem was adopted January 26, 1950. On that day that India also became a republic.
The emblem itself is entitled " Ashoka Stambh", which is four lions standing opposite to each other over a circular abacus. Only 3 of which are visible.
Underneath the lions, is the "Ashoka Chakra" which has 24 spokes with a running horse to its left and a bull to its right.
Below the emblem are the words "Satyamev Jayte" which translated means "truth always prevails".
