The Thompson submachine gun was developed between 1917 and 1919 by John T. Thompson. They went into production in 1921 at the Auto-Ordinance Company, though production has since moved to Birmingham Small Arms, Colt, and Savage Arms. They are still produced today.
If you're interested in owning a Thompson, it's rather difficult for a civilian to own a full-automatic firearm (though legal in most states). If you're interested in a semi-automatic variant, the Thompson model 1927A5 (under the model "M1927A1 TA5") has been produced by Kahr Arms since 2008.

Shooting people. That's a misleading answer. At one time, the Tommy gun was popular among gangsters. Now days, it's uncommon for a machine gun to be used in a crime. Machine guns today are mostly used by target shooters and collectors.
