The United States Secret Service started shortly after President Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Surprisingly, the duties of the Secret Service did not, at first, include protecting the president! The job of the Secret Service agent was to fight crimes of counterfeiting (the printing and spending of phony money). It was not until President William McKinley was shot to death in 1901, that the Secret Service began to protect the President as well.
Protection of the President is the duty of the agents assigned to the White House detail. They must be willing to risk their lives to save the President. A Secret Service White House policeman was shot to death while protecting President Harry Truman from gunmen in 1950. In 1981, an agent was seriously wounded while trying to shield President Ronald Reagan from gunfire.
The President and his family may sometimes become annoyed by the constant presence of the Secret Service, but they understand how important the agents are in assuring their safety. More than anyone, the President appreciates how dedicated the Secret Service has been in performing its protection duties over the past 100 years.
The Secret Service was established as a law enforcement agency in 1865. While most people associate the Secret Service with presidential protection, its original mandate was to investigate the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, a mission the Secret Service is still mandated to carry out.
Today the agency's primary investigative mission is to safeguard the payment and financial systems of the United States. This has been historically accomplished through the enforcement of counterfeiting statutes to preserve the integrity of United States currency, coin and financial obligations.
The Service started protecting Presidents in 1902
Since 1984, the Secret Service's investigative responsibilities have expanded to include crimes that involve financial institution fraud, computer and telecommunications fraud, false identification documents, access device fraud, advance fee fraud, electronic funds transfers and money laundering as it relates to the agency's core violations.
To combat these crimes, the Secret Service has adopted a proactive approach that utilizes advanced technologies.
It came into being on 5 July 1865 in an effort to protect US currency from counterfitting. It did not have a Presidential protection role until 1894, and that was on a part time basis. After the assassination of President McKinley they began the Presidential protection on a full time basis, in 1961 past presidents were covered and on 1962 Vice Presidents were added and in 1963, that protection was added for First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy.
The Secret Service was established by President Lincoln in order to combat counterfeit (fake) money.
1865, Lincoln's last official act was to sign the authorization creating the US Secret Service

The US Secret Service is the US government agency nominally in charge of counterfeiting. It was originally part of the Treasury Department , but its role became one of crime-fighting and was expanded in 1901 to include protection of the President and government officials, for which it is now chiefly known. In 2003, the Secret Service was placed under the Department of Homeland Security.
