The commander of Donelson, General Simon Bolivar Buckner requested terms of surrender. Grant replied: " No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately upon your works."
Buckner would reply in part; "to accept the ungenerous and unchivalrous terms which you propose."
