The Japanese were allies of Germany and, like Germany, were trying to conquer nearby territories in order to have more resources to fight the war. The Japanese were building a railroad that crossed present-day Viet Nam and Thailand. The bridge did actually exist and was built in western Thailand using British Prisoners of War.
