The first computer files were invented in 1948 or 1949 at Eekert Machley Computer Company for the UNIVAC computer. The data of these files was the same as had previously been maintained on punched cards for use on electromechanical unit record machines since 1890. However to permit processing the file data at "electronic speeds" it was instead recorded magnetically on nickel plated brass tape.

A "folder" is a desktop icon used by GUI type Operating Systems to represent a "directory" on a disk. Command Line type Operating Systems had been using "directories" to organize files on disks (especially on large harddisks) since the early 1960s.

Dr. David Canfield Smith coined the term "icon" in his 1975 PhD thesis "Pygmalion: A Creative Programming Environment". While he did not think of the "folder" at that time, as the concepts of the GUI developed an icon shaped like a tiny file folder came to represent a directory and it acquired the name "folder".
