England was not born in the same since that the United States was. One cannot point to a particular date. England amalgamated over time as the Angles, Jutes, Saxons, Celts, and Vikings fought back and forth, with one group gaining superiority, and then another, with victors absorbing the lands of the vanquished. We can only really talk about a unified England in retrospect. My vote goes to Alfred the Great as the first true unified English king.
