When was the first US military draft?
The first military draft was during the civil war.
The FIRST US war to have an "official" military draft was the US Civil War (1861-1865); which also resulted in the nation's FIRST "draft riots." Vietnam (1961-1975) was the LAST military draft, with the accompanying last "draft riots." US males were drafted in WW1 (1917-1918), WW2 (1941-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953).
The question does not indicate a nation with any draft laws. If speaking about the US Civil War, the first draft in American history was created in the South in 1862 and in the North in 1863. Other US wars also had a draft, and also a peace time draft as well. US President Nixon abolished the US draft.
Describe three reasons why the American public did not support Americas involvement in the Vietnam War?
Should the US government be allowed to draft Americans to a foreign conflict involving Vietnam that was never declared a war by congress?
A draft is a compulsory call to civilians. The military is always reaching out to civilians to get them to join. But when there are not enough voluntary enlistments during a time of emergency such as a war, civilians of a certain age and health are forced to join or are "drafted." This first happened in the US during the Civil War.
During the US Civil War, which was also an "un-declared war" (can't declare war on yourself), men rallied to their respective flags (volunteered). Until after the first few battles...when they saw what real war was; after that...men had to be FORCED to fight! That entailed conscription; being drafted for military service. The US Civil War was the United State's first official large military draft of men. The Vietnam War was America's last draft of men.
In what year of what of this century did the US switch from a Military draft system to an all-volunteer force?
The draft expired in about 1970/71; President Nixon requested and received an extension for the draft until US POWs & troops could be pulled out by '73. The all volunteer military was transitioning in by '75. Until 1975, the US still had plenty of draftees fulfulling military duties; example: men drafted in 1970 had a commitment until about 1976.
