Advertising has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians used papyrus to make sales messages and wall posters. Commercial messages and political campaign displays have been found in Pompeii and Arabia. Lost and found advertising on papyrus was common in Ancient Greece and Rome. In the 18th century advertising started to appear in English newspapers. In London Thomas J.Barratt is recognized as the father of modern advertising. In the United States in 1840 Volney B. Palmer set up the first advertising agency in Philadelphia and by 1900 the advertising agency had become the focal point of creative planning and advertising had become a profession.
