In 1801, Richard Trevithick built the "Puffing Devil" road locomotive powered by steam, but it couldn't run for long without needing more water and was impractical. In November 1881, Gustave Trouvé built a working three-wheeled electric automobile.

Karl Benz built a four stroke internal combustion automobile in Mannheim, Germany 1885. The first one was sold to the public in 1888.
