Disregard the first and last bar, they mark the beginning and end of the bar code. Each digit in a bar code is made up of 2 tall and 3 short bars, starting with the second bar read 5 bars as 7,4,2,1,0. which ever numbers has the tall bars add them to get the first digit of the bar code. 7 and 4 is 0.
Bar codes do not directly identify where a product is made. They are primarily used to store product information such as the manufacturer, product type, and size. The first few digits of a bar code can indicate the country where the bar code was issued, but not necessarily where the product was made.

The first product to have a bar code included was a packet of Wrigley's Gum.
IBM. IBM are the creators of the bar code, so I'm sure their the first to ever scan a bar code. The first bar code was on a 10 pack of Wrigley's gum. The first retail store to scan that pack of gum was at a Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio.
