The idea of cell phones began in the 1930's with police radios and in 1947 Bell Labs made the first cell phone, but it wasn't until 1974 when Dr. Martin Cooper made the modern cell phone. I would imagine he made the first call on it since he is given credit was the inventor for Motorola. The cell phone stayed for government use only until 1984 when it was finally sold to the public. The first cell phones were heavy, had a large battery in the bottom, and were carried in a bag. They were expensive to use and calls were often dropped or wouldn't connect since cell towers were not around like they are today.
A former Motorola employee, Dr. Martin Cooper, is credited with the invention of the first portable phone. Dr. Cooper made the first cellular phone call in April of 1973.
