The current design of the American flag, as adopted on July 4, 1960, contains 50 stars, arranged as five rows of six stars and four rows of five stars.
In 1854, the American flag had 31 stars. This configuration was adopted on July 4, 1851, after the admission of California as a state in 1850. The number of stars on the flag changed over the years as new states joined the Union, with the flag eventually reaching 50 stars in 1960.
I don't know anything about the first flag, but I know that the first U. S. flag had thirteen stars and thirteen stripes. After the U. S. annexed the Republic of Vermont, Kentucky separated from Virginia, and both were admitted as new states, the U. S. adopted a flag with fifteen stars and fifteen stripes. Congress then passed a law to keep the number of stripes at thirteen in honor of the original thirteen colonies/ states.
