The US and the Soviet Union made several failed attempts to launch a spacecraft to Mars.
The Soviet's Mars 1 was the first spacecraft successfully placed on a course toward Mars. It was supposed to do a fly-by. Contact with it was lost while on the way -- it may have passed near the planet.
The US spacecraft Mariner 4 completed the first confirmed Mars fly-by on July 14, 1965
The first mission to Mars was Mars 1 a Soviet flyby probe that flew past Mars and took some picutres.
The first probe to orbit Mars was Mariner 9.
The first probe to try to land on Mars was Mars 2 a Soviet lander probe. It crashed and was destroyed on impact.
The first successful landing on Mars was Viking 1 which sent back many picuters of the area around the landing site.
So far there have been no manned missions to Mars.

the first spacecraft to explore mars is the mariner 4
The first spacecraft to land successfully on Mars was Viking 1 in 1975
Mars has constantly been visited by spacecrafts. The first spacecraft to visit Mars was the Mariner 4. After that Mars has been visited by numerous spacecrafts like: Mars Pathfinder, Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, Mars Express and the Mars 2 which was the first spacecraft to land on Mars.

The first spacecraft to fly by Mars was Mariner 4 on Jul,14, 1965 (launched Nov,28,1964). Mariner 4 sent 21 photos.
the Mariner 4 launched in 1964 by NASA
Dear Wiki Questioner, The first spacecraft that visited the planet Mars was the "Mariner 4". It was launched by NASA in 1964 and simply flew past Mars, taking pictures and gathering information as it passed! The first spacecraft to LAND ON Mars were the "Mars 2" and "Mars 3" probes launched by the USSR in 1971. Unfortunately, both of these probes stopped functioning not long after landing on Mars. NASA's "Viking 1" lander was the first spacecraft to land on Mars and function for an extended period of time (6 years in fact).
