There are three species of wolves in the world - the grey wolf (Canis lupus), the red wolf (Canis rufus) and the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis). The grey wolf, of which there are numerous subspecies, is found across North America and Eurasia. The red wolf is found in the eastern United States, around North Carolina. The Ethiopian wolf is found only in Ethiopia, hence the name. So in the United States there are two wolf species, the grey wolf and the red wolf.
First off, there is no such thing as a "wolf cub." Secondly, wolves are pups when they are first born. They become a wolf when they reach a year to two years of age. A wolf is not a wolf before it is a pup: it is a wolf AFTER it is a pup.
