The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix (France) in 1924 and the United States did participate and won four medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze).
Charley Jewtraw won gold in men's 500 meter speed skating ... silver was won by the men's Ice Hockey team and Beatrix Loughran in women's singles figure skating ... and bronze was won by Anders Haugen in men's normal hill ski jumping.
The bronze medal in men's ski jumping was originally awarded to Thorleif Haug of Norway with Haugen finishing fourth. At the 50 year celebration of the 1924 Norwegian Olympic team in 1974, a sports historian found an error in the scoring which put Haugen third and Haug fourth. The error was rectified a few months later when, in a moving ceremony in Oslo, Haug's daughter presented Haugen (then 86 years old) with the bronze medal her father had been awarded 50 years earlier.
